The Challenge
As my husband and I journeyed through South Dakota in June 2016, we learned that our school taught French was very different from the French used in South Dakota.
Flandreau, for instance, is not pronounced fland-row, but flan-drew. And Pierre is not pronounced pee-air, but pier.
A woman from Switzerland who was visiting the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre, South Dakota the same day we were tried to explain why the pronunciations are so different than what we would expect.
